One of the biggest things I see you brilliant, multi-passionate creative types struggle with is focus.
Or rather, lack thereof.
It’s like…you have all these interests, or all these ideas, or this long list of things you wanna do (or think you should do). And for whatever reason, you never seem to get around to them.
Like, you reeeally wanna start on that book you’ve been meaning to write for the past – ahem, ten years – but every time you sit down to start, your mind draws a complete blank.
Or, you write a few sentences, then erase. Then you write another few sentences, then erase those. Then, you decide that you’re hungry and pop open the fridge to dig something out. And then you realize there’s nothing that looks remotely appetizing, so you head out to the 7-11 and snatch up a few “inspirational” chocolate bars, so that you maybe, just maybe, can bribe yourself into starting. Then, you come home, with a renewed feeling of determination: I’m.gonna.get.this.done.or.else, and sit back down, only to hear a knock on your door. It’s your super-sweet neighbor with a batch of freshly baked cookies that she wants to share with you, while she chats you up and catches you up on all the latest neighborhood gossip (okay, this has never happened to me, but it’s a “fantasy distraction” scenario I’ve created to get myself excited about distracting myself. See how good I am at this?;))
The thing is, in all of your well-meaning efforts at forcing yourself to just sit down/shut up/do the work, you’re probably creating all kinds of unpleasant (and totally unnecessary) drama for yourself.
In other words, you’re trying to control something that you currently have no control over: the momentum of your own inspiration.
Here’s what I mean: think of your creativity as a stream of energy that’s moving through your body. If you’re allowing it, you feel the flow – that’s that high that comes when you’re really feeling so turned on by something, that you could feel like you could spend the rest of your life doing it, because it feels so.freaking.amazing!
On the other hand, if you’re blocking the “flow” with thoughts like, I need to get this done, or else. Or, why is writing so hard for me? Or maybe, just, I suck, then any amount of sheer willpower + determination can’t get the current flowing again.
But when you focus on the one thing that you do have control over in any moment, you can un-stick yourself faster than you can make it to the 7-11 down the street. Seriously.
So…what’s that one thing?
Oh yeah…you heard me, baby.
Pleasure is the mechanism that allows us to shift our internal lens back into clarity.
Pleasurable action. Pleasurable thoughts. Pleasurable feelings.
Whatever it takes to just…feel…a…little…better.
Maybe that means taking a walk. Maybe it means going and getting a massage.
Maybe it means heading to your local coffee shop, ordering a decadent almond milk-mocha and sipping it, slowly, as you savor every last drop.
Maybe it means quieting your mind in meditation.
Maybe it means giving yourself a giant, juicy Orgasm. Just sayin’;).
When you start putting pleasure first in our life, you start hooking into your natural creative flow + inspiration.
Things that used to feel like a total grind begin to feel effortless. Or, they vibe out of experience altogether, and you gravitate towards the work that is truly in alignment with who you really are + what you really want.
Because you’ve taken the time to tune into your Pleasure Frequency….
…where all your magic lies waiting for you.
